There are some sessions that you wonder if you were really meant to do the session. The first time I was scheduled to photograph this family the weather was TERRIBLE and sweet Gabby had an allergic reaction to some weekend farm animals. So, we rescheduled only to find that that day the weather was very iffy - meaning really dark clouds and threat of rain the whole time. I made it to Poplar Grove a few minutes before Karla and her family only to realize that the highly anticipated Poplar Grove Halloween festivities were already set up - OOPS!

Well, we made it work. We played quickly before we lost all of our light and still had lots of fun!

Karla - thank you for continuing to come to me year after year. I love watching Gabby grow up before my lens.

2011 Holiday Mini-sessions Nov. 5-6

It's that time of year again. Folks are starting to make their Christmas lists and portraits are always at the top of the list because they make the perfect gift for parents/grandparents.

With so many families needed updated portraits, there's only so much time available to get them all in, so mini-session have become a necessity for Dana Jackson Photography.

Session times are filling up fast, so don't delay. This is the only weekend available for any portrait sessions available until 2012.

I really need to get better about blogging sessions, there is a lot I need to catch up on! What a better way to start getting back into blogging by introducing you to my first seniors of 2012. That's right, seniors - TWINS! It's the perfect way to kick off the season. The girls were smart to get them done BEFORE their year actually started, because once it starts it just gets crazy.

We played a little downtown, which always has so many different textures, and then ended the evening at the beach.

And of course, you can't do a senior twin session without getting some of them together. The girls are just naturally beautiful and seemed so comfortable in front of the camera. Photographing them was a lot of fun.

Turning 6 | Carolina Beach Child Photographer

There are some sessions that are just meant for certain photographers, and I think this one was surely meant for me. Sweet, Mr. W is 6 - TODAY! He's lucky enough to be on vacation during his birthday, and I was lucky enough to have a spot open to get in a quick session to help him celebrate yesterday. There's something special about turning 6 to me. Maybe it's because I also have a 6 year old (well, 6 and a half according to him) and I realize how much different this is than 5. I wonder if I'll feel the same way when he turns 7 - but for some reason, 6 is a big birthday and I was tickled pink when mom said she wanted a session just for him. He is an amazing kid, and I can see why mom wanted to capture this time in his life. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the birthday celebrations. And HAPPY 6th BIRTHDAY!!!!!

Oh, and I have to add - I LOVE the fact that mom purchases things based on whether they will make a good photo prop!!! A mom after my own heart!

Melinda's Family | Carolina Beach, NC Family Photographer

It's always fun photographing other photographers, and Melinda was no exception! When she told me she was going to be near me, I jumped at the chance to meet her. We've been online friends for a long time, now - but never met in person. She is as sweet as I imagined her being, and her family absolutely wonderful. We met at my favorite beach spot, and I got to meet her whole family. I really love extended family sessions, they are always so full of laughter. Thanks for your patience in getting your blog post up!

Melinda's youngest, Makenna was so sweet the whole session.
And big sister, Jaylyn, well, even though she really didn't want her picture taken much (I mean she's 4 and her mom is an awesome photographer, she has better things to do), she hung in there for me!

And then there was Melinda's nephew, Tyler, oh, he was so sweet! So full of smiles (I LOVE the one of him watching me while dad is throwing him up).

There is nothing, nothing sweeter than children with their grandparents. Nothing.

If you haven't had an adult family portrait taken with your family, it's time you do. You won't regret it, I promise. Look, all grown up!
Cousins - this one stands alone.

When you are a photographer, you have tons and tons of beautiful portraits of your children. What you don't have are portraits of your children with the person they love the most. Melinda - you and your girls make my heart smile!

I have brothers, and while we are close, I don't think it's anything compared to what sisters share. Melinda you have to have one of these big on your walls!
I wish we could have had a whole day to sit and chat and play together. I hope next time you are in the area we can make time to do that!

A morning with Skylar on the beach | Carolina Beach, NC Photographer

My first morning beach session of the season and I couldn't be happier. I don't get to do them often, because, let's face it, the sun rises pretty early around here. Luckily I'm a morning person, and we all know the best time of the day for just turned 1-yr olds - so we were a great match. Skylar is such and easy going, happy baby (plus I just LOVE her name!).

I just love her bonnet!

Even though Skylar was just about done at this time, she surprised us by cooperating for a 3 generation portrait (and the dog!).

I seriously could photograph a mom and her child all day long, and these two were no exception. Their bond is obvious!
I love how curious and adventurous 1-yr olds are. It didn't stop Skylar that she isn't quite walking yet. She was everywhere!

2 babes in a field | Southport Children's Photographer

Who would have thought that when Cassie requested a field for the twins 18th month portraits, we would find one in her mom's back yard! I wish you could have seen the grin on my face when I pulled up in the driveway. I knew instantly it was going to be perfect. And to top it off, Ava and Eli did not disappoint. They were smiley, giggly, all over the place, and full of personality. I couldn't have asked for a better session.

I love, love books, so loved capturing mom and the babes having a little story time.

And what a treat, to have their great-grandmother and grandma there for the session!!!!! Melt my heart.

And well, it's difficult to get any siblings in the same frame together, so 18 month old twins was exceptionally challenging! Thank goodness mom had high chairs from both sides of the family - a little piece of history - to help corral the kids!

A Family with love to share | Carolina Beach, NC Family Photographer

I have been friends with Stephanie for a long time. Her youngest, Bates, and my son, Silas have been classmates since they were 3. I have photographed Bates several times with preschool portraits, but I've never photographed her family. So, you could imaging my excitement and honor when she asked for a mini-session of her beautiful family. Typically mini-sessions only happen a couple times a year, but new this year at Dana Jackson Photography, mini-sessions can be scheduled at anytime during the year, as long as the location is in Carolina Beach. There are so many beautiful areas around CB, this makes it an easy option for families wanting updated portraits of their children.

Stephanie has a very special reason to get updated portraits, too. Her family is in the process of adopting a boy from Honduras. They are in the beginning stages of the adoption process, and one of the requirements is a recent photo of mom and dad. Well, like many of us - we have all sorts of pictures of our children, but very few of just adults. Again, I felt even more honored they chose me as their photographer for this occasion. What a reason to CELEBRATE!

Jillian and Bates - Oh, they have this amazing connection! I can only imaging what it's going to be like when they introduce a little brother!
The lighting was beautiful, the weather perfect, and what a beautiful sight to see signs of spring! And of course a beautiful family makes it all the better! I look at this series and I KNOW they have so much love to share!

Getting Stephanie and Johnny together for their shots led to pure silliness! It's a bit awkward being in front of the camera - but they did beautifully! I love the obvious chemistry between them!

Keep watching - in a year or so, I'll have the pleasure of introducing their newest family member!

Meet Lukas | Wilmington, NC Newborn Photographer

I think I could have photographed Lukas all day. He started off wide awake - and then quickly fell into a deep sleep and pretty much stayed that way throughout the entire session. How did I get so lucky?!? Lukas was just 12 days old when I got to meet him - and it couldn't have been more perfect.

Can you tell he is loved? Both of these are probably some of my favorites - ever.

Of course it wouldn't be a newborn session if I didn't break out the bowl and floor! And I could absolutely kiss those baby wrinkles!

Swoon, sigh - aren't they just beautiful. I love my job!

Sweet Sam | Wilmington, NC Newborn Photographer

Life has been crazy and I haven't been blogging like I used to. So sorry about that - but I promise to get better! I was so excited for Megan when she called to tell me Griffin was going to be a big brother. I photographed Griffin when he was a newborn, too - so it was only fitting that I head out to the house again. I'll tell you, these boys are very much alike - they made me work for it!

You always have to worry a little when photographing a two year old, no matter what kind of session - but a newborn session always presents a bit more of a challenge. I couldn't have been more happy with Griffin's cooperation! He loves being a big brother!

Sam is so lucky to have his grandma make all these wonderful blankets and hats! All of the blankets and hats shown in this sequence were done just for Sam! Oh, I could eat him up!!!!

I love capturing firsts for families. This was the first time that Griffin got to hold his baby brother. They have these huge beanbags, and they act as the perfect support for the two. Griffin did NOT want to give him up - he's a natural, don't you think?

I can't wait to watch these two grow up! Thanks, Megan and Vinny for inviting me back to celebrate these moments in your life. It was truly an honor. Congratulations!!!!

Wow - I seriously haven't blogged since October?!? It's not because I haven't had my camera in my hand. I have holiday sessions, a breastfeeding fundraiser event, the most amazing session with my son and his buddies, a newborn from right before Thanksgiving, and I'm gearing up for a CONTEST!!! I have a lot of catching up to do, so keep watching the blog.

But first, I have to introduce you to sweet Lola. Last week she was just one week old. This maybe quite possibly be the most expressive 7 day old I've ever met. Her beautiful soul reaching gazes and the sweetest smiles made me want to hang out with her all day.

This little boy is already so loved - I can't wait to meet him and I know the rest of the family can't either. I say "rest of the family" because this is my family, too. Justin is Eddie's cousin, and in his family in-laws are not out-laws, so he's my cousin, too! Callie and Justin made the trip from South Carolina for our beach session, and once Jack arrives, I'll make the trip down there to help them celebrate. Callie is absolutely glowing - she's gonna be such a great momma and Justin is oozing love for his beautiful wife - I can only imaging what's gonna happen when he lays eyes on his baby boy.

Thanks so much for asking me to be a part of this amazing time in your life. I look forward to photographing Jack as he grows up. If he's anything like his mama and daddy - he's going to be a great model for me!

Life Celebrated at the Arboretum | Wilmington, NC Photographer

Well, a lot of firsts for me during this session. Inspired by my friend Angela - and amazing photographer in the Bay area in CA, I really wanted to try my hand a including video during a portrait session. Luckily I was working with an amazing family and didn't mind the patience it required as I tried to figure it out as I went along. I kept pressing the wrong buttons on my camera - def. a learning curve. Then I had to figure out how in the world to EDIT video - I've never done that (and as you can see there are some spots where I didn't get the video length quite right). I will go back and play some more with making the video blend in a bit better, but Karla's been waiting long enough! Then is is my first time incorporating any kind of slideshow into my blog. I'm a little giddy - a little feeling like pulling my hair out at this whole process - but mostly giddy. I can see this really working for some of the families I photograph - especially "day in the life sessions".

Oh, and the slideshow is a little blurry here - because I really wanted everyone to see it a bit bigger - I promise all the images and even the video is nice and sharp!

Karla - thank you again for letting me play during our session. You guys were the best!

Beautiful Kona | Wilmington Children's Photographer

The plan was for a birthday session to celebrate Kona's 1st birthday. But as life would have it, we just weren't able to get it done until now - 3 months after her 1st birthday. I don't think Kona minds, though. She was a little slow to warm, cried if I touched her, and cried every time mom and dad put her in a new spot, so I was a little worried I wouldn't get any smiles. Mom and dad assured me she would loosen up, and after a bit of a cardio workout from mom, I saw they were correct. Kona was beaming!

The family image on the right - dad sat down with Kona - and she laid her sweet head on his chest - and what a perfect spot for a family shot. Melts my heart. This little girl is so obviously loved.

Mother + Daugher = FUN | Wilmington, NC Photographer

I seriously had a very hard time figuring out what to show from this session. I could have picked 15 more and still not picked all my favorites. Meet Kate and her mom. They live in Ohio - and Kate is thinking about making some career changes - maybe Navy, maybe Coast Guard - either way - there are changes in the air. Kate grew up spending her summers in Carolina Beach with her grandparents - and it seemed the logical place for a little getaway with her mom. I couldn't have been happier that she picked me as her photographer!

There was so much silliness and laughter.
It was early in the morning - and nothing was open at the boardwalk, yet - but we were lucky enough to run into a Wheelfun Rental http://www.wheelfunrentals.com/Content/Home.aspx employee - so we asked if we could borrow a surrey and play for a bit!
But seriously - these two women are B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L - I could have photographed them all day!
Oh, and can you believe at one point during the session, Kate said, "I'm sorry - we're not very fun to photograph." Ummmm - crazy fun! Thanks for choosing me - I hope you both had a fabulous weekend!

Married 60 Years | Carolina Beach Family Photographer

I can't even imagine what 60 years of marriage must feel like. The life they have shared together, the love, the tears, the adventure - it's almost too for my brain to comprehend. The love between this family is unquestionable - I'm honored to have spent even 1 hr with them.

I wonder, as they watched their grown children "play" on the rocks - if they were able to see them as the adults they are now - or if they just have visions of them at 9, 7, and 4 - while on their vacations at Carolina Beach. Sweet, nonetheless.

Two people that are madly in love + an amazing network of family and friends + the most gorgeous weather ever + a wine vineyard = the most beautiful wedding ever. Now, I'm not a wedding photographer, so don't get any ideas, but when your best friend gets married, you can't NOT have your camera ready.

Tiffany and Dade - I'm so happy for you and really - those words do so little to describe how really happy I am for you. On your wedding day, you asked guests to bring a small item, a token for your alter that symbolized this special day. I didn't put anything on the alter during the ceremony like everyone else. I searched and searched for just the right item to bring and I couldn't find the ONE thing that would convey the message I wanted you to have. I want you to remember how crazy powerful this love feels right now - how it engulfs your whole body and makes you giddy and also a little sick to your stomach. So, I decided my alter item would have to wait just a little while. Because what I really want you to have - to remember - to look back on - is this (well, not this blog - but the pictures:)).

And there's no way I can end this blog post without a couple kid pictures! My friend, Eric had his super cute little boy there - and he was practicing jumping off the steps - and then Kara's daughter - oh, my - I couldn't have planned it any better. Looking at her running makes my heart smile!

When Dawn contacted me about portraits for her daughter before she started losing her baby teeth - I knew that this was a mom that got it. It's so important to document these moments with our children since we all know they grow up way too fast. I can't tell you how many parents I've met that have teenagers and tell me they haven't had any portraits done of their kids since they were toddlers.

Now, I wasn't expecting this beautiful 6-yr old to be such a tough one to crack! Luckily mom did say she does have a serious side - and to capture that is also really capturing her. Whew! I do look forward to our next session when her little brother is with her - because I have a feeling I'm going to see a whole new side of Little Miss A!

Cooper's Morning | Lifestyle Photographer in Wilmington, NC

Yes - I'm going to blog a whole session - how can I not? There is so much story to tell in this one little post.

A little back story - 5 years ago, Megan was pregnant with Cooper when Silas was just a tiny baby. She would stay after her prenatal yoga class to help hold/comfort babies during my mommy/yoga class. She held Silas a lot. Then when Silas started crawling - we didn't see or hear much from each other until I ran into her 2 years later when she was pregnant with her second. I was a budding photographer then - eager to get my name out. We all get our "start" from somewhere and Megan was mine. She agreed to a maternity session and then spread the word like wildfire. Before I knew it I had a whole new circle of friends and an amazing client base. Many, many of my clients I can string back to this circle - to Megan. For that I am truly thankful.

I also just recently met up with 20 AMAZING photographers - and boy was I inspired. Just seeing all that talent in one room is a bit to swallow. I came away from the weekend knowing that I had made lifelong friendships - and that it was time to embrace what I LOVE about photography. For me it's all about LIFE. Sure - I capture the essence of it in every session - but I've been longing to do a WHOLE session that really celebrates where someone is right now - their amazing life right now. Sure I could do it with Silas - but really - even if you aren't a professional photographer - you know how hard it is to really capture your own children. So I started thinking about WHO would be a good candidate. I'm sure there are many of you on the other side of the screen with your hands waiving in the air, "me, me, me - why didn't you pick me?!" And aside from the above info on how Megan really helped me launch my business - there were a few other factors. I knew without a doubt that Megan would have no expectations of me. She would LOVE it if I got ONE image of Cooper being, well, Coop. That alone takes off some major stress in a session. And really - because next week, Coop will start Kindergarten, like my own son, Silas. And those of you that know me - know I'm not dealing with it well.......at all. I needed to pour a "starting school celebration" somewhere because I just can't quite celebrate it in my house!

Have you heard enough? Don't know how I got so winded!!! So, I hung out with Cooper yesterday morning. We decided that mom would leave - and I would just see where the morning took us. I walked away a very happy photographer! Now - looking at these - all in one place - my name font looks funny - the color is all over the place - and guess what - I don't really care right now. This session was for me - I can fix all that stuff later. For now - I just want to share. So, ignore some of the technical stuff - and just enjoy Cooper's Life!

We started off outside - Coop loves his scooter and bike - and he actually just completed a children's triathlon last weekend. That second image on top..... he was telling Megan "bye" as she drove to work! I knew it was going to be fun.
Then we went inside - and you can say Coop has a thing with wheels. Ramp building - remote control car driving - all boy! That last image - he was laughing because he ran into me with is car!
Here Coop is playing with his toys - giving them voices much like in Toy Story - telling stories - but his stories have one underlying theme - they all involve a bit of potty talk (thanks to Dad) - so that's what that second image giggle is all about. This is when I wish I knew how to use the video function on my camera better.
Then Cooper sat down at the table - for what started as art work - and it turned into a cutting and writing session. I love how hard he is concentrating. He's going to be great in Kindergarten! I love how he drew his own lines before he started writing.
Then a smoothie and some basketball - you know - you gotta have some good energy before you can concentrate on dribbling through the house.
And maybe one of my favorite images from the whole day - this ONE image made me so happy - that I'll probably frame it myself for my desk! This is what life is all about!
So, Cooper, Megan (and Nat) - thanks so much. To everyone that helped me get where I am - thank you, too. To my amazing photography friends that continue to inspire and push me - I love you more than you'll ever know. I feel renewed.

Now - if I can just muster up the energy to get Silas in front of the camera!

3 boys at the beach | Carolina Beach Family Photographer

I will admit - when mom contacted me about photographing her 3 boys, ages 7, 10, and 14 - I had a slight panic attack! I searched other photographer's blogs/sites, asked on the professional forums I belong to, and everything I heard scared me even more. The general consensus was that boys this age are difficult to get to relax, will often not get along with each other, and can be quite surly.

Well, everything I read couldn't be more wrong! These boys were awesome. They got along with each other - we nothing but respectful with me - and I think they actually had fun. I know I did!

So refreshing! Thanks boys!

Birthday Family on the Beach | Carolina Beach Photographer

I was so excited to do this session. When families contact me about beach portraits, I almost always recommend the beach in front of Ft. Fisher Museum because of all the different textures it offers. But this family has been coming to Carolina for generations and generations and they really wanted something different. They wanted something that would show them the beach how they remembered it as children. They also had 2 birthday's to celebrate. The baby is almost 2 and grandma's birthday was Monday (I'll not share her age). So, off we went to the north end pier. It's such a beautiful location - I really should use it more.

First you have to meet their 4 beautiful daughters. They were so delightful the whole session - and one thing they all have in common.....they love their little sister.
When you time it right - and of course we did - the water is so reflective in this area.
And like I said - I have to use this location more - this might be my new family portrait! I love the colors of the wooden columns and the blue ocean and how it really shows off this beautiful family!

Beautiful and pregnant | Wilmington Maternity Photographer

What better reason to have portraits done than when you are vacationing at the beach AND you are pregnant! Although they knew it was a little early for maternity portraits (typically done between 32 and 36 weeks) - they were here and luckily I had a cancelation at the last minute and was able to work them in.

It was so fun working with working with them - and their love for each other is obvious.
It's amazing to me how different the belly looks with a different position and angle. Of course the first and the second portrait were taken at the beginning and the end of the session - so maybe all the up and down and up and down got that baby to poke out a bit more!

They are going to make amazing parents - I already know. My only regret is they live in Charlotte - so you guys won't be seeing this newborn on my blog - but hopefully they'll come back to the beach - and I can capture their baby's first beach experience (well, second beach experience.)

I had the pleasure of meeting two beautiful families at the beach yesterday for a session while they were on vacation in Carolina Beach. Meeting families from all over is one of the great perks of living in a tourist spot. They requested a joint family session - and although I said yes - I was a bit hesitant. Well, I shouldn't have!!! I actually think having two families there made it a bit easier at times. The girls were so busy playing with each other - I'm not sure they ever felt like they were at a portrait session!

Meet Ava - she has the most beautiful big brown eyes - that you can just sink into.

I can't tell what I like most about this portrait - Ava's sweet smile or the way daddy is looking at her. Sigh.

And then there came Caroline and Charlotte - oh my sweetness! I could eat them up. Caroline was very much aware of the camera - and didn't hesitate to stop and pose anytime she got a chance. Charlotte, a typical pensive 2-yr old, was a bit harder to crack. But the image on the right - I smiled so big when I was uploading my pictures today - here she is running from daddy!
My favorite part of family sessions is capturing families playing.
And if you haven't seen enough sweetness for 1 blog post - I couldn't resist sharing this one. I see this as a big canvas!!

Well, he's almost 3 - just a couple more days! My dear friend, Heather, from way back in days of Richlands Elementary, came to the beach, again (2 years ago I photographed her family - and John was just barely walking!) Well, he's full of energy - laughing, smiling, making faces. Basically - a typical 3 yr old. And what a trooper he was because man was it HOT! Portrait session in July are tough for everyone involved - but I couldn't have asked for a more willing subject.

Since they had beach portraits 2 years - we decided to meet at the Arboretum this time. It's such a great place for kids.
By the end of the session - we were all sweating - but John wasn't too hot for some bubbles. I had planned on having him catch the bubbles - but he had much more fun trying to blow bubbles.
I love it when kids play with their parents - I love, love, love this series of portraits. I can feel the love between them all.
Oh, and if a birthday isn't enough to celebrate - we also had a couple other things to celebrate. The day of our session, Friday, was Heather and Chris' 5th wedding anniversary, AND.......
guess what John's pointing to? Congratulations you guys! Can't wait to meet the new little one!

Sometime the most fun shoots are the completely unplanned ones. I was visiting some very dear friends of mine recently - and while we were sitting outside enjoying adult conversation while the kids ran around freely - the setting sunlight was just too beautiful to resist - especially with Lilly - almost two - running around being, well, two. Oh, how I wished I had a tutu with me - but then I might have missed the moments.
And this one - well, it had to stand alone. I love every single thing about this.
Sandy and Maggie (and the rest of the crew) - it was so awesome visiting with you. I only wish I could see you more often - and for longer periods of time. I think of you often - and look forward to our next visit.

My nephew is 16, today. What a great day to be born, 4th of July. He lives in Texas - and I hope he's having a blast with his parents and friends. Until just recently I hadn't seen him in over 2 years when my brother called me and asked if it was cool if Hank came to NC for a couple weeks to start off his summer. I couldn't have been more happy. Let me first tell you - I was a little hesitant - since I hadn't seen him in a couple years - and really hadn't spent any quality time with him since he was here the summer he turned 10. So, I didn't really know if I was going to be faced with one of those kids that are moody and too cool for adults. But what a pleasant surprise (and really I know my brother and sister-in-law well enough to know there should have never been any doubts). I had so much fun with Hank. He really is an amazing kid (can you call a 16-yr old a kid?) - anyway - I had a lot of fun with him and I was sad to see him go. I so look forward to next summer.

His mom's one request was to get some good pics of him while he was here. Apparently he doesn't like having his portrait done - and has skipped out on the last TWO years of school pictures - so mom has nothing recent of him - and neither does the rest of the family. Well, we were too busy playing - and of course the day before he left we were scrambling to find time to fit some portraits in. I'm not sure why he avoids the camera - he's such a gorgeous guy and he was so easy to photograph - and we were only out there for 20 minutes!!!!

I can't wait to spend more time photographing him next summer - as he will be Senior material, then!!! Hank, Happy Birthday - I hope you have a great day - and thanks so much for coming out to visit - it meant the world to me.

Fast Mover on the Beach | Carolina Beach Photographer

You never know what to expect with a 1-yr old on the beach. Sometimes they love the sand and water and sometimes - well, they don't. Cole is a fast moving 1-yr old that LOVED the beach. I couldn't get enough of the water, sand, rocks, you name it. The only thing he didn't like was being still.

One of my favorite locations - because we have the beach - and then right next to it - a grassy area with trees. We moved here thinking it might be a distraction for Cole - but nope - he was just as busy. I love 1-yr olds!

I love getting the call mid May that it's time to schedule Morgan's birthday session. Mom is such a smart mom - and she hires me to be there for the party day to capture all the fun. Even one less task to do on birthday day is a treat. I have loved watching Morgan grow up. I wasn't able to make it to the party at Monkey Joes - but I was able to be there for the small party at her house on her actual birthday.

As usual we spent a little time together before the guests arrived. Oh, I could just eat her up!!! She looks so grown in these portraits to me.
And then it was time to PARTY! They had some water play outside - I love her sporting the shades (she wasn't really keeping out the sun - she didn't like the water splashing in her eyes) - a few crafts, and then of course cupcakes.
A fun day for all involved!

Lillian is 8 months old - and she has the most infectious smile. We met at the arboretum - and I'm glad we met early - it was hot!!! She made us work for those smiles - but boy was it worth it!
Now - mom and dad were not planning on being in any portraits - this was supposed to be all about Lillian - but at the end of the session - I sprung it on them - after they had been sweating for an hour (thanks, right!) I love watching parents play with their children. So we had a quick play session!
There was no way I could share one of these without sharing the whole series. Usually my goal is to go through and eliminate those that are so similar - but I just love this whole series!

It was so fun - and I can't wait to share the rest of the gallery. Lillian was absolutely perfect!

When people look through old photo albums, they see a lot of themselves when they were little - playing with brothers, sisters, cousins, probably quite a few with grandma, grandpa, and dad. But I'm sure there are few with mom. Because she's always behind the camera. It's a terrible plight all mom's face. They love to capture these fleeting moments in their family's lives - but are rarely captured themselves. For the average mom, it's bad enough - but for a photographer - it's even worse.

When Janice of http://www.belladreamsphotography.com/ told me she was coming to Carolina Beach on vacation - I was overjoyed. And not only was she staying at CB - but the condo she rented was just right down the street from my house! She kept assuring me that her husband was ok with constant guests while they were on vacation - because I think I went over there every day! And then she asked me if I would photograph her family while they were here - and I was so honored. Since she's an amazing photographer and has no problem getting stunning portraits of her own children - I spent my time focusing on family - and on Janice's connection with her family.

Meet Marco - almost 1-yr old - I can't believe it. He is a mama's boy for sure (but I'm proud to say he let me hold him quite a bit - and even when I didn't have cheese puffs in my hands as bribes).
And big sister Bella - man I fell in love with her.
Janice's family is so beautiful. I loved their outfits (thanks Lindsay and the whole OG crew!) it was the perfect color combinations.

When you are having so much fun - it's hard to stop - but you can usually take the cues from the little ones as to when the session is over. Marco had the last word. Can you hear him saying, "enough of the love."

I'm not sure what I was worried about. We had this session scheduled for June - with the hopes that the twins would be sitting up - but as luck would have it - this beautiful setting, Orton Plantation, is scheduled to close on June 1st - so we had to improvise. The twins are not sitting up quite yet - so I was really worried about how I could prop them in such a big outdoor setting. Well, these are the most laid back babies you will ever meet. So happy and content.

And I had to share this one - Eli was so tired by the end of the session - he just conked right out while he was in this bucket. So - with a quick repositioning - of the baby and the bucket - I got one of my favorite images!!!

A new tradition | Wilmington Family Photographer

This beautiful family received a gift certificate for a portrait session from their employees for Christmas - they must be some amazing folks to work for. Dad had a cool idea for a portrait tradition: take a yearly portrait in the same place that will mark their family's growth. They suggested a local boat dock - and there were some amazing trees that would work perfect!!! I love that the youngest is reaching up to hold onto that first knot!
They really are a stunning family too look at - these all just make me smile.
Then to end the session - we went out on the boat. Sometimes I love the outtakes as much if not more than the "portraits". This was the end of the boat ride - the boys were pretty much done with the session.

We met at the arboretum - which never disappoints me in it's beauty - no matter what time of year it is. Eden has this new thing - now that she has two bottom teeth - her smile has changed - she kind of holds onto the bottom teeth with her lip and it is so incredibly cute!!!

Little Miss P is visiting her grandparents for a couple weeks and I couldn't have asked for a more delightful session. This little girl is a gem - and I'm sure her parents and grandparents already know that - but WOW - what a great session. She was full of smiles as she adventured all over her grandparents' beautiful yard. Yes - all these were done on the family property. The color and beauty were amazing.

I really love family sessions - especially when the family is all about having fun! This family was the lucky winner of a family session that was raffled off at Silas' preschool a couple months ago. But really - I'm not sure who was more lucky. I had so much fun at this session - it was so refreshing. It doesn't hurt that they are all absolutely beautiful to look at, too!

I've been taking preschool pictures at Silas' school for 3 years now. This is a rare year that there are no siblings IN the school. I always love the sibling shots I get during preschool pictures - so this year I offered the parents the opportunity to bring in their older/younger children for Sibling Mini-Sessions. Man was it fun! Lucky for us there's this beautiful lot of trees right next to the school that makes for a perfect backdrop.

It's been an amazing 3 years at this school - Silas has had a blast - I can't believe he's going to be in Kindergarten next year.

And a few of the individuals! There are some seriously cute kids at this school!

I could just eat her up! The last time I saw her - it was an afternoon mini-session - and she wasn't happy. This time we met at the boardwalk in Carolina Beach at 8am - and boy could you see the difference. She was full of smiles this time.

She's not quite walking - but almost!
She was hiding behind mom - and then peeked around to give me the best smile - look at those little teeth!
Her first experience with the beach. She was mesmerized by the sound of the ocean. She liked crawling around on the boardwalk.
And really - what can I say about this portrait? The pink against the blue wall - the beautiful eyes looking right into me - cute, cute, cute!
Even at the end of the session - she was just a ball full of happiness. Here, her dad is lifting her up - and she and I are playing. I could photograph her all day!

What a refreshing session. I'll tell you - these must have been the most polite, well mannered teens I've ever met. They had the most positive attitude toward the photo session - and made my job very easy! Meet MB - she just turned 16 - and mom really wanted to capture who she is right now. Of course we got some of her and her brother. Aren't they beautiful kids!
I love the sun on her hair here.
MB has the most beautiful smile - but after some practice - I got her to not smile - and WOW - it really brought out her eyes.
While MB was changing - I got a couple more of her brother - Watch out girls!
Mom really wanted a portrait of MB on the beach in this dress. She was such a trooper - it was pretty cold - and the water even colder - and yet here she is - with a wave washing over her feet - and she's making it look like it's nothing! Oh, and yes - that's her brother in the background climbing on the rocks.
That look, those eyes, just one more time!
Thanks again for such a great session. It was so much fun. And as much as I love photographing toddlers - it was nice to relax a little!

Shhhhhh - it's a secret | Wilmington, NC downtown photographer

I love shooting downtown. There are so many different textures and backgrounds; everytime you turn a corner - you get a whole different shot. And what a perfect place to do a session with adult siblings. But, shhhhhhhhh, if you know their mom, don't say a word - they did this session as a complete surprise for their mom. She has no idea the session took place - and won't know until her kids present her with the portraits. What great kids!!!!!

When the session started it was so overcast - I was pleasantly surpised to see this sunflare pop up over the building!

The youngest -a sophomore in high school - has the most amazing eyes. I love this shot in color - because it really shows his blue eyes - but it was screaming for b/w, too!

The sister in the middle - Now this shot looks amazing in b/w - but with all the different brick texture - I had to share it in color!

And the oldest - he escaped the snow to get here - his mom didn't even know he was in town!

I think mom is going to really like this one!

6 days of PURE SWEETNESS | Leland, NC newborn photographer

You know when you have something in your mind - and you even have in your mind how your going to execute it - but then it comes time to actually make it happen and you can't do it? Well, sometimes newborn sessions are like that for me. Usually it's not an issue since my style is a bit more of a relaxed, lifestyle approach. But I've had some stuff I've been wanting to try - and after I get all the "typical" newborn stuff done - I'm pretty tired and ready for home. Well, when my friend contacted me about photographing her newborn - I jumped at the chance to offer her a "casting call" session. Basically - she lets me do whatever I want - with no agenda for herself - and in exchange she gets some awesome images of her brand new baby girl with no session fee!

So, meet Livie - as she is so affectionately called by those that have already fallen madly in love with her!

Look at those sweet little fingers!!!And I couldn't get enough of those lips!!!!Have you just eaten her up yet? She is so stinking sweeeeeeet!And then - even though this isn't new from me - I'm always taking fun images of newborns with their big brother or sister - when I saw the light coming in from the window - I knew I had to try to get it! What a lucky little girl to have such a great big brother!
So, thanks so much for letting me come and play - for totally rearranging your room for me - helping me transport all my stuff to and from the car - for helping me during the session - for letting me dow whatever I wanted - but most of all - for having the most adorable baby girl, ever!!!!

There were some cute kids in my studio on Friday! We had so much fun with the Valentine Mini-sessions.

First two kiddos - Miss M has gotten so big - it's hard to believe it was 2 years ago when I did her newborn portraits!

Everytime we tried to get big brothers shots - she had to be right there - I mean right there! Made for some great captures!

I managed to get big brother alone for a moment - and he gave me this amazing look. I couldn't resist black/white for this one.
Little sister was BUSY - but she was stalled slightly while playing with my umbrella!
And then the next set of cuties!!!! Mr. V also made his debut here - about 6 months ago. Anyone remember a super cute green hat - or a baby in a hammock? That was him!

I love, love the way the two boys are looking at each other in the middle picture.

Ummm - I did mention there were cute kiddos in the studio, right?

Ahhh - and then Miss A - she was 8 months old on Friday. If you've seen the most recent Wilma! magazine - you might recognize her in there with my ad. Usually - she is so smiley - I mean - super smiley - but today, ummm, not so much. She wasn't feeling well, and didn't get her normal afternoon nap - so we got moody Miss A pictures this time.

But she is still cute as a button!

And really - I feel inclined to post a more smiley Miss A.....this was from our mini-session back in the fall. I don't know that I ever posted them here because we ended up doing the session after my blog. So, here's what Miss A is normally like. We'll see her again soon for her 1 year portraits - and I'm sure she'll be back to smiley again!

A mother and her son | Wrightsville Beach Family Photographer

I try to celebrate life every day, and I love being able to do that for others through my lens. Sometimes it's harder than others, because sometimes, well sometimes that celebration only comes after lots of heartache and grief.

Last February, Molly was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell Lymphoma. She was 5. In kindergarten. And just 5 short months she lost her battle with cancer. Like her dad, Buck said, "life is cruel."

Yet, this family, this amazing family, still finds reasons to celebrate. If you aren't familiar with Molly's website http://mollyrowlee.com/ please bookmark it now. Check it often. It will change your life. I think Buck said it well on the site:
"Her battle with cancer sparked the love of a community and thousands of people have rallied behind Molly, as well as our family, throughout this entire ordeal. Molly has taught us many things throughout this journey. We understand too well how very precious life is and we have come to redefine the priorities in all of our lives. Suddenly, we are able to find more time to spend with our families. We hug each other more tightly, kiss each other more passionately, and we're focused on being better parents....better people."

Now that's something to celebrate!

Meg and K are spending the month in NC - and while they were here I really wanted to capture some of their strength, energy, love, and laughter. I had such a great time and could have spend the whole day with them. K is the same age as my Silas - and their interests are the same - so it was fun to talk about Batman, Transformers, and Bakugans.

They started with a puzzle - and it didn't take long before the sillies overtook!
I love K's concentration while putting this puzzle together. I also LOVE his eye lashes here! Oh, and the hands in the overalls - perfect!
Then we headed for the beach. We were hoping for a beautiful warm January day, but, ummmm, well, we just bundled up and went for it! We stopped at the playground first - and K was too cute. He was so proud of himself jumping up to that monkey bar and holding on!

This boy makes me smile!!!!! So silly and so full of energy!

They were looking at how the birds were standing - and the K had to try it out!

I just liked this one!

K was telling me about how his mommy is such a good artist! They love drawing hearts in the sand with Jesus on the cross. I wish I could have recorded K telling me about it - it was a great story.

A little spinning fun - that made Meg very dizzy!!!! I love the shot.....

But also love the fall down afterwards. This makes my heart smile. I know that was a lot of pictures for a blog - but this is one of those sessions that can't be summed up in 4 or 5 images. So thank you for looking.

Celebrate Life!

Meet Elsa - just 8 days old

You saw the maternity pictures of this family not too long ago - mommy was absolutely glowing and the kids were so excited http://danajacksonphotography.blogspot.com/2009/11/yep-shes-beautiful-wilmington-nc.html. Well, she's here - and beautiful! Born at home - to one awesome family that has been so patient waiting for the blog! I photographed her 2 days before Christmas - and then took some time off. But I'm so glad I got in early - newborns really do photograph best in their first 10 days of life.
When I got there she was ready for a nap - perfect for me!

Then she woke up - and mom was feeding and settling her - and I turned around and saw big sister. It has to be hard to have a new baby in the house and to no longer be the only girl. I had to snap and share this picture!

And then - I turn around - back to mom and baby - and sweet Elsa has the biggest grin!!!

And now, in daddy's arms - she is gazing right at him.

Getting 2 siblings with a newborn isn't always an easy task - but these kiddos were so good. Normally I wouldn't try this with a baby that was awake - but Elsa didn't seem like she was going to sleep anytime soon. I'm glad I tried!

She may have been the best newborn ever. Really - simply amazing. She was asleep when I got there - so I was able to get right to work.
She didn't sleep long - but I quickly found out that she was just fine hanging out. I moved her around, and around, and around - and she just looked around at her new world! I've never had a baby awake that long and be so content.

Then, finally - she decided she needed to eat - so we took a break - she got a little snack - and then -well, you can see what she thought.

I've known the M family for a couple years now, so I was so excited to hear they were expecting #2. Mom told me that big sister loves to have tea parties - I couldn't have been happier! I look forward to photographing the two sisters having a tea party in a couple years!!

Since I know my sister-in-law is stalking my blog - waiting for this post - I figured I better get it up! Over Thankgsiving - Silas and his cousins got together to work on their Christmas present for Meme. These kids LOVE being together - it's so fun to watch them. Meme is blessed with 5 beautiful grandchildren. It was a tough session - starting at noon - sunny with spotty clouds here and there - just to throw a kink in things. No the most optimal shooting conditions -but we made it work!

I'll start with the youngest - Jefferson just turned 1 a couple months ago - you guys have seen him on my blog several times before. He has the best smile!

And then Emma

And her twin brother, Jacob

And Silas even cooperated with me for a few minutes (which is a lot to ask of him - he hates me taking pictures of him!)

And the oldest, Jackson - I love, love his expression in this one - I had to go black/white!

And believe it or not - this was one of the first pictures I took - right out of the car. I went into this shoot thinking that I might not have much success getting all 5 of them in one portrait - but, they proved me wrong!

I miss everyone already - and so does Silas - it was great seeing everyone.

This session was so full of laughter - I hated to see it end. My husband's Aunt asked over the summer if I would be available to photograph her family over Thankgiving holiday. Both her boys are now married - and they need a new family portrait in their living room. The weather couldn't have been more perfect!

So, Aunt Pete -here's your portrait!

And of course I coudn't just get the one family shot - I had to spend a little time with everyone! The oldest son with his wife and beautiful daughter. And the younger son with his new beautiful wife. And she couldn't be any more perfect for Justin.

And since S is the only grandchild right now -I had to spend some extra time with just her. Actually we were getting ready to leave - and I saw these beautiful colors surrounding her. I had to change lenses and start snapping. I'm glad she wasn't a toddler that would have been bored with this area by the time I got all my stuff together!

I really had a great time - and can't wait to share the rest with the family.

It's a good thing pregnant women are usually pretty hot natured - because everytime I try to photograph this family - it's cold!!! We are 3 for 3 now - but they never back out - and we always get beautiful images! #3 on the way!

This one makes me giggle - I was asking them to NOT smile - but they are just like kids - can't NOT smile - of course you guys know me - I like this better than a serious face any day!

I went back and forth on this image - trying to decide black/white or color - for whatever reason I've been in a big color mode lately - so color it is! I think it's his blue eyes though!

She has a perfect belly. And due in less than 4 weeks.

Does it get much sweeter than this?

Well, maybe just a bit!

A quiet moment - mom won't get many of these in a few weeks - wait - I don't think she gets many of those now!!!

I can't believe P is already a year old. It seems like just yesterday she was just 4 weeks old - and this summer I saw her again as she was just starting to sit up (as she modeled for me in my new studio). And now, wow - unbelievable!

Little miss P loves to read - and while in the house pretty much had a book in hand.

Now, this one really is an out-take - but I had to share it - because it cracked me up when it happened - and cracked me up even more when I went to process the portraits from this session. That face!!!

Then we went into her room for a few minutes - she wasn't really having it - and I really didn't think I got much of anything from her room. Well, what a surprise when I started editing - to see this ballerina in training! She has the toe point and everything!

And then the real fun came. We went outside and mom found a flower for her. P LOVES flowers.

And then we went to the park - because what new 1yr old doesn't love the SWINGS! I could have taken pictures of her on that swing all day long. Just seeing her made my heart smile.

And yes - I know you just saw this picture in the collage above - but I love it so much - it might just have to be a new studio sample - so I thought it deserved to be repeated so you could just soak it all in. Ahhh - am I crazy - what do you think?

Oh, and did you see those shoes?!? I love them!!!!!

What a beautiful, beautiful little baby. She is absolutely perfect! When I got there mom and dad had her wrapped in this awesome blanket - it made for the perfect backdrop.

The light was so beautiful coming in the window - you could really see her eyelashes so well - I had to take a shot!

Meet Vance | Wilmington, NC Baby Photographer

What a beautiful family! Dad had to go to work, so we got a couple family shots for their Christmas card - and got scolded because we weren't really supposed to be there - oops! It was a beautiful location, anyway! I love sweet look on Vance's face here - about as close to a smile I got the whole session! Guess you know what makes him happy - being super close to mom and dad!

Mom was really looking for some timeless portraits. Although we did it in her house - she really wanted the full focus to be on her sweet boy. Luckily there was some BEAUTIFUL light in her bedroom - so that's where we set up shop! With his favorite blanket - he really does love it - and loves to chew on it - I love his little glance here.

I love this one!!! Even though we tried and tried for smiles - he kept giving us the sweetest looks - how can you not love it! I love his little ringlet! When we first scheduled the session, we were worried that he wouldn't be sitting up on his own very well. Ummm - little did we know he'd be crawling and pulling up and fully on the move! He was FAST! I love the way his little dimple shows up as he's smiling at mom!

Sometimes serious is ok, too. I love, love, love this one!!!!

Meet Willow - 12 days old | Wilmington, NC newborn photographer

What a sweet, sweet, baby girl. When I got there - she was already asleep - and since mom remembered to have her already undressed - just wrapped in a blanket - I was able to get right to work.
She even tolerated me getting her unwrapped - which we didn't think she was going to like - but oh, isn't she sweet!
Here she is laying in daddy's arms - I love seeing her little eye lashes - but I think I love her little pinky sticking out even more! And it's a good thing I took advantage of her sleepy time when I first got there - because it didn't last long. After replacing many, many, many blankets due to newborn pee and poo - she was wide awake. Which is ok, too - because I love newborn eye-contact. Oh, and check out her red hair!
Now, this image intrigues me - and it might be one of my favorite newborn images! She is hanging out with mom - sitting up in her arms - "looking" out the front door. The light coming in is beautiful - she's slightly sucking her lower lip - her sweet hand in front of her - I love all of that - but there's something about the way she's looking that gives me goosebumps. I don't know what it is. What do you think?

Is it possible that a family can just keep getting more and more beautiful every time you see them? Well, I think so! I met this family when Melissa was pregnant with Liam - she was one of my first clients. Mom wanted a more "rustic" session - I scouted out a few different locations - and we ended up going with Poplar Grove - so many different nooks and crannies to use!

Well, now Liam's 2 - and big sister Ella Rose is 4 - and man - these parents better watch out!
Cute, cute, and more cute! Those beautiful blue eyes, sweet little smile, baby blond hair, backwards hat.......sigh.
I love this one of Ella Rose. So happy and alive.
Mom asked questions about what to wear - and I recommended she find something from Ella Rose's closet - and coordinate the rest of the family around that one outfit.....Mom did good - real good! These outfits are stunning in color or black and white!
Just a sweet smooch while moving to a new location - I love the puckered lips!
It was near the end of the session - the kids were pretty much done - but we wanted to try to get just a few more of them together. I love this!!!
Mom and Ella Rose were singing a song together - I love how they are looking at each other. Pure love!
Sometimes you really want smiles - and sometimes, well, seriousness works really well, too. These children are so beautiful - smiling and not!

There are a lot of cuties at this school! I got to spend the morning photographing the 3-yr and 4-yr old classrooms. These kids were so fun and so cooperative. I normally head out to the playground for their candids - but it was a cloudless day - so instead - we stuck to the trees - and boy was it beautiful in there - and since it's cooled off a bit - there weren't many bugs!

In previous years - I always did the candids in black/white only - but I've been loving color lately - so this year the parents are in luck. I'm showing them everything in color - and they can choose anything to be printed in b/w!

Of course - these 3 were screaming for black/white - so I had to share them with you that way, too!

And you know what - even Silas did great this time. Usually it's a day of tears and frustration for him - he doesn't like that I'm outside taking pictures while he has to stay inside the class. I guess he's growing up. So, here's Silas with two of his best buddies!

Tomorrow it's all about the two year olds - and they are always a lot harder to get these big smiles from - so wish me luck!

I didn't expect him to be sleepy this time - but I also had no idea he'd be this happy! He is such a cutie! Here he is in the same cradle he was in as a newborn. Ummm - just a tad bigger?

We hung out most of the time in his room - and he smiled and laughed - and was just generally happy. I don't know what I like best - his smile, his leg rolls, or how his toes are curled up!
This one just makes me smile - how can you not?

Sigh - baby blues. So sweet.

Maybe one of my new favorites!!! I'm normally have a very clean processing - but I really have been wanting to play with some new textures I picked up last week. I love them on this image - what do you think?

This beautiful family is celebrating their parents' 40th Wedding Anniversary - and what an awesome gift to give their parents - a family portrait session. I wasn't sure we were going to be able to do this session. The weather was HORRIBLE! It rained all day - with only a few breaks here and there - and no sun all day. Normally we would reschedule for a better day - but almost everyone was from out of town - so we went for it. Let's start with the kids....

Only 2, but oh, my - that's a lot of cuteness packed into a two-yr-old. As much as I'd love to say he was reaching for me, because we just clicked like that - I was holding his precious ball - playing catch. I love his outstretched arms - his sweet little fingers, and I love his expression. So sweet!

And how about big sister. Watch out mom and dad - she is a beauty!!!!

Now, this image, I just love. I really, really love it. I tried to pinpoint what I really love about it - is it the hair blowing in the wind, the light in her eyes, her smile, the way she has her tongue kind of rolled up? No - those are all great factors - I really love it because she is looking at her daddy with this sweet expression. Melt my heart!

I told you he loved the ball!!!! A little catch with Grandpa.

It took a bit to get this shot. Poor Mark wouldn't/couldn't smile - and try as she might, Angel had a tough time NOT smiling!!! But, ahhh - they got it! I love this one! They are getting married soon - and they are going to be one beautiful couple on that day!

You know that ball the little one loved so much? Well, I put it on top of my flash (those that use a dome - it's a great ball holder!) - and look at the response I got from the kids! I just had to share. No worries, mom - I got a great family shot in this series!

But what I loved most about this session, was to see how in love the parents/grandparents still are after 40 years of marriage. What an awesome thing!

Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this celebration with you. It was so fun, and you guys were such troopers to deal with the wind and rain!!!

Amost TWO - Little Miss M | Wilmington, NC Child Photographer

I had so much fun today at the Arboretum with little M! She is almost two and absolutely adorable!!

Here she's telling me her dress got dirty while feeding the fish - I love her little lips. This was the gate to the Children's Garden - she loved the gate - opening and shutting, opening and shutting.

She was really serious most of the time - not in a bad mood - just pretty serious - but I got a smile for a quick moment playing around the gate.

I love her stare here. It was screaming for black/white.

Mom was blowing bubbles for her and she finally wanted a try - she was working so hard to get those bubbles to come out - look at that concentration.

This was almost the last shot of the session - she was wore out. It was hot and sticky. I love this image because to me it still shows how young she is.

Happy - the whole session - absolutely happy. When Michelle contacted me about doing his 1 year session - but stated she wanted something different - not the beach, not the park - I knew we had to head downtown.

I'll tell you - I had a hard time narrowing down what to show on the blog - I love them all and can't wait to go through the rest of the bunch!

We found this great little alley - but it was sloped downward - he thought it was so fun to go barreling down the slope towards us - I was so worried he was going to fall face first!

We got this awesome cake from http://islandcakery.com/ Their deserts are so yummy!!! At first Koven didn't know what to think of the cake. But it didn't take him long to tear it into pieces! Sigh - so stinking sweet!

And what a trooper - we're walking back to the car and I see these steps - and I so want to get one more shot. And of course, Koven produces!!

My Nephew - almost ONE! | Rocky Mount, NC Baby Photographer

This weekend I went to Rocky Mount and my sister-in-law and I had this whole session planned for Jefferson at City Lake. Well, Mother Nature had a different plan because it rained and rained! Luckily she has this great carport and I had my handy "wood" rug - so we made do!
Jefferson was so fun - lots of smiles all around!

Can you say CUTE?
I love the way he's looking up here - I know - it's very "Sears" with the whole looking up thing - but I just love it anyway!

And then it was time for CAKE! He didn't know what to do at first - but it didn't take him long. And yes - in that 3rd picture - the cupcake was stuck to his face!!

The most beautiful blue eyes ever. I promise - I did nothing to enhance his eyes - they are just that big and beautiful!

I love you Jefferson! Only one more month and you'll be ONE!!!

Celebrating Ben - 6 weeks old | Wilmington NC Baby Photographer

I was so excited to do this session. Mom and I had been talking about it for a while - and then when we were scheduled to do it - the baby acne showed up - and then I went out of town - so, next thing you know, Ben is 6 weeks old!!! You never know what you're going to get at any newborn session - but 6 weeks can be even more unpredictable. This is when they stop sleeping so soundly, the arms are flailing a lot, and moods are variable. Well, Ben was a dream!!!!!

When I saw his room all done up in Dr. Seuss - I knew I had to get at least a couple shots in there. A dear friend painted this book shelf for him - and look - it's Ben's Pig Band!

And then I did get him to sleep - after I tightly swaddled - and then slowly let his arms go - and then worked quickly - because he didn't stay asleep long! But look - see his sweet eyelashes - almost translucent!
The great thing about 6-weekers - they are much more likely to smile!!! And Ben - man did he smile! They call him Popeye - wonder why?

And how about a LOL - for those not familiar with text jargon - that's Laugh Out Loud! Oh, I could just eat him up - such a happy little man!

And on a more serious note - there's nothing like a sweet moment captured between a mom and her son. Look how strong he is!!!!! Sigh - babies grow up so fast!

Celebrating a New Home | Habitat For Humanity | Wilmington NC, Photographer

Many of you know that I do some freelance photography for Wilma! Magazine http://www.wilmaontheweb.com/ (check out the photo spread I did on back to school clothing!)This month one of my projects was to cover a story about our local Habitat For Humanity's Women Build http://capefearhabitat.org/wp/ and I was inspired to participate more and spread the word. I won't begin to try to describe the program - there's no way I'll be able to give it the justice it deserves, so please check out the link for all the specific info. They are breaking ground for this deserving family's new home this Saturday, August 22, and the hope is to have this family in their new home by Christmas.

What I do plan on doing is covering this story personally/professionally as my own little service project. Over the next couple of months, I hope you'll come back to my blog and follow this family's story with me. My final goal is to have beautiful portraits for the family to hang in their new home at Christmas.

My other goal is to encourage you to participate in any way you can. If you are local - please come out and help - volunteer days are Wednesday and Saturday. If you aren't local - then seek out your local Habitat For Humanity organization. If you're a photographer and looking for a way to give back to the community - this could be a great project for you, too!

Enough blabbing - on with some pictures! These are the shirts - aren't they cool!Meet Cristina, the beautiful mama and recipient Cape Fear's Women Build. She has already put in many hours of "sweat equity" and plans to put in many more for her own house.

And the two youngest, Nancy (she thought it was really fun to bang on the walls) And Debbie - who wasn't sure about any of it! But man, she is beautiful!

The house I was photographing in isn't their home - but their soon to be neighbor's home. This is where they are going to be breaking ground this Saturday. I hope to show you an after shot of the family in front of their new house in a few months. I love that their road name is "Hope Springs Court." The whole family, Gregory, Nancy, Cristina (mom), Debbie, and Ana.

So, get involved, in any way you can. I'm so excited to be a part of this project!!

3 week old celebration | Newborn photography in Wilmington, NC

He couldn't have been more perfect. Meet Little V - just 3 weeks old. Perfect skin - perfect attitude - pretty much if he was asleep or awake - he was simply perfect!

Mom had some cool bold colored walls - they made for the perfect backdrops!

I loved his hat against this blue wall.

Now big brother TC - wasn't really into me taking pictures - but I did manage to get a sweet one of him anyway!

Then right before I left - I had to try the baby in the hammock! All dressed up as a little man - but out cold. We had to work fast to keep the mosquitoes off him!

Celebrating Models to Be | Carolina Beach, NC Child Photographer

I met these adorable boys almost 2 weeks ago - but then went out of town - so I'm only just now getting to post them. Sorry for the delay parents - but I hope it's been worth the wait! These boys were so much fun.

First meet Mr. C - he's 4 months old - we were planning on a beach session - but at 4 months old it's a little difficult to do individual shots at that age at the beach - so my natural light studio was the perfect place to start! Look at those eyes - he looks like a baby GQ model!
My son was gracious enough to share his chair - which has a perfect rounded back for a 4 month old that isn't quite sitting up by himself!! I love this full body shot - look at those legs!

It was tough getting the two boys together - but I love this shot!

So, now meet big brother L - such a ham! He was in such a good mood the whole time - up for anything.

Then we headed to the beach - and L was def. in his element!!! I love the way his little hand is place on his back!

When mom said, "I your pictures of the kids in the air" I knew I had the perfect client! It's slowly becoming my signature shot! I try to do one at every session (if the kids are small enough!) This one came out perfect!!!

Celebrating Newborns - 10 day old Nolan | Newborn Photographer Kure Beach, NC

I've been taking pictures of big sister K for a couple years, now - she goes to preschool with Silas (my son) and I take their school pictures. So I was delighted when they asked me to take Nolan's newborn portraits. It was a long day - but man - I got some fun images.

He started out WIDE awake - and I mean wide awake. Look at those beautiful blue eyes.

And then he konked out - I've been wanting to do a shot like this for a while - and finally figured out how to do it!!!

I don't know what it is about this one that I love so much - sweet sleeping baby, chin rolls, pouty lips - sigh.

I love seeing his eye lashes in this one - and of course those lips!

No words - just melt my heart. Mom and dad are going to have to watch big sister K - look at those eyes.

Ok, now I totally had to share this! Normally I don't allow personal cameras to be brought out during a session - but how could I say no to a budding photographer. And look - she likes close-ups, too!

These girls were so much fun! Who would have thought that a minature golf course could be such a beautiful backdrop for pictures. I met these two beautiful girls for a couple rounds of golf, some portraits, and lots of fun. I love how fun this one is - big sister - hanging off a bridge!

And on a more serious note. She doesn't look 11 here - sorry mom - you'll have to watch out!

I love the way she would kind of giggle and pull her shoulders up. Just sweet innocence to me. The breeze couldn't have helped out any better in this shot.

After trying many shots with a more serious look that usually ended in lots of laughter - they finally nailed it. I love this image.

I was so excited to meet her - and look - she was excited to see me, too!

She is such a good baby - pretty much slept the entire time - except for needing a few diaper changes - and some food.
All curled up - I love how her toes are up by her chin - the beauty of photographing them under 2 weeks old.

Ok, does it really get much cuter than this? I don't think so!

Cori and Dan are getting married!!!! Cori decided that instead of having a bridal portrait at the reception, she wanted to have a family portrait - and how could she not with sweet, adorable Jack!!! Although I kept trying to focus on Cori and Dan for some "couples" shots - Jack really did steal the show! So, as you look though this blog - enjoy his show!
I actually thought this shot out before we met at the boardwalk - and lucky for me, Jack pulled it off perfectly.

I won't tell you what they were talking about - family secret (hint: it is something very appealing to 4yr olds - and usually takes place in the bathroom!)

I feel like I've watched these boys grow up. I remember going to Alex's 1st birthday party - and now he just turned 3!!! I met these boys at the Arboretum at 7:30am - and if you know their mom, you know that was a feat in itself!!!

I think this one is my favorite of the whole session - can you get much happier at 7:30am?

If you know big brother, Ben, then you know what an amazingly sweet boy he is. This image just captures this personality trait.

Thanks Facebook for connecting old friends!!!! Shauna and I go way back - and I mean way back - to when I was in 7th grade. Her brother an I were childhood/highschool/young adult sweethearts - and their whole family (mom, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents) was my second family. It's amazing how time can distance you and then in an instant (thanks Facebook, again) you are able to pick up like no time has passed at all!

I met Shauna and her beautiful family yesterday at Kure Beach for a fun family session - and it was fun.

Did I mention that her children are BEAUTIFUL! Just look at them!

Now, I love it, just love it when a family isn't afraid to have fun in front of a camera! They jumped, and danced, and posed - it was fun!!!

And this doesn't happen often - but I even managed to get on the other side of the camera for a quick snap of the two of us!!!!

Celebrating Grandparents, again! | Wrightsville Beach Family Photographer

Meet sweet Ella again - this time with her other grandparents! Ella's mom and dad had a great idea last Christmas and bought each set of parents a gift certificate for portraits with their granddaughter - what an awesome gift - not just to their parents - but also for their daughter. I wish everyone would consider portraits with their grandparents/grandchildren.

Now, for the adventure! There was a possibility of rain - but if you know the area - you know that this time of year - there's a possibility of rain everyday!! The sky was dark and the wind was whipping - but we continued on - thinking even if it did rain - it probably wouldn't be much.

We started off ok. I love this sweet picture with grandpa - makes me miss my grandpa!

Ella had a lot of energy - but I love how grandma is looking at her - you can see/feel the love.
Seeing this really makes me want a picture like this of Silas with his grandparents.

And can you see the dark clouds in the background? Can you see the rainbands? Those of you that live in the area - you remember the torrential downpour we got last Monday night? Well, this was the warning!!! It didn't blow over - crazy hurricane type rain. So our session ended quickly.

Unfortunately - grandpa had to go home early the next morning - but we finished up the session with grandma. The weather was beautiful so I brought some bubbles along for fun - and boy was it fun! Thanks so much for such an awesome session. What lucky grandparents you are!

Celebrating Maternity - Urban Style! | Wilmington, NC Maternity Photographer

She's beautiful - just glowing - and I loved it! I've been wanting to do a Downtown Wilmington maternity session for a while. Lucky for me Danielle was up for it! And what a trooper because we must have picked the hottest day ever.

This was a fun and challenging session for me - I'm not used to having to "pose" my subject so much. Usually, it's all about me capturing life as it's happening. Well, an urban maternity session requires more attention to posing - so it was an awesome learning experience. Thanks, Danielle, for your patience!!!

Had I been a little more adventureous, I would have climbed on the car that was right in the way to get a better shot - or at least gone in the store and kindly asked that they move it - but hey - it was hot - and I was working fast!

There's so much awesome texture downtown.

I love, love, love this one. She is so beautiful anyway - but this one just screams beauty/mom/pregnancy/ you name it.

So, we found this little green, lush, oaisis downtown - who would have thought! While Danielle was waiting for my next instructions (and I was trying to figure out what they could be) her sweet baby girl starting moving around. There's the LIFE I love to capture!

I love the green her top - and the way her blue eyes just pop!

There's a great fountain downtown - made for a great backdrop!

This one is just fun to me! I love where we live!

So much fun - and I can't wait to do some more urban sessions. Speaking of - what a great excuse for a casting call!!! If you are pregnant - and are interested in an urban session - let me know - The session will be on me - and I'll throw in an 11x14 (limited # so act quick!)

Celebrating Family and Friends | Topsail Beach Family Photography

What happens when you put together 5 kids (4 of which are under 18months old) and 10 adults? Lots of pictures and loads of fun. A group of friends got together for a week of vacation - gathered all their children together for the first time - and just really enjoyed themselves. I did a mini-sessions for each family - and got to capture their celebration.

This little girl was on the move the whole time. As long as she was allowed to roam - she was happy, happy, happy!

This little boy was the most mellow little one. The water pouring image was right after he did a face plant in the sand - they dumped water on him - and he never skipped a beat! His big sister was quite the ham!
He was so happy to see this dog walking on the beach! Smiles galore! I love the one of mom and dad swinging him!

This little man has been struggling to sleep on this vacation - but you wouldn't know it from these smiles!

And let me just say - the adults def. knew how to have a good time. They let me glimpse just a little of it!

Thanks so much for the opportunity to capture your families and friendships. It was awesome. I can't wait to go through the rest of the pictures. You guys were great! Have fun on the rest of your trip!

Celebrating Abbey | Baby photography, Wilmington, NC

Sometimes it's nice to be wrong - and this time, Abbey proved me wrong. When her mom contacted me, asking for a newborn session - with her daughter already 5weeks old - I warned her that it would be difficult to get typical newborn shots at her age. You would think, just a month old isn't too old, but for newborn curliness - it often is - especially since I advise moms to get babies to me before they are 10 days old. Often times, I'll even encourage parents to wait a bit longer for the session until baby is actually stronger (holding head up and stuff). Well, it's a good thing we went ahead with this session. She was a DREAM to photograph.

I got there and she was already asleep.

And then she let me unwrap her - and continued to sleep some more - would you look at those eye-lashes and head of hair! This is pure sweetness!
And then she woke up - and tried to figure out what was going on - she wasn't too sure of me at first.

But then, oh my, she just started smiling and almost laughing - she was having a great time!

So, after some food - she konked back out - and look at this - I would NEVER have thought I could get an almost 6week old to do this!

Ahhhh - so sweet!

I'm so glad I got to meet Abbey and her parents - what an awesome experience. I can't wait to go through the rest of her portraits! Thanks mom and dad for giving me the opportunity to capture this time in her life! Don't forget, I love comments!

Celebrating Families | Beach Photography, Wilmington, NC

What a fun, fun, family! I love meeting new families and this family is no exception. Mom bid and won this session at an auction at a local community school - and I'm so glad she did. Her two girls were a hoot! So much character and energy. Youngest daughter, Miss B - was constantly striking poses - always ready for an audience.

And big sister, C - was a bit more reserved at first - very aware of the camera. Near the end of the session - mom and dad gave up keeping them out of the water - and I'm so glad they did - because then the real fun started. The girls LOVED it - and big sister C came out of her shell. Really - I love this image - I hope all parents let their kids "play" at beach photo sessions!

The two girls were really into it - mom, dad, and I just sat and smiled. Their breaks were only brief - but sweet!

This portrait cracks me up - so much fun! At this point in time I couldn't really get them to be serious- but it's ok - I think it's them!

It's always fun photographing families - but it adds a different challenge when you are photographing a photograher's family! For me there's this added pressure to get it right - and at the same time a relaxed calm knowing my subject knows exactly what I'm going through! Meet Lisa from http://sentimentalphotography.com/ and her beautiful family - and boy are they beautiful!

We even managed to get the family dog in there!

Now, I debated whether or not to show this - but Lisa gave me the go-ahead - so thanks Lisa! Now, you all know I have a 4.5 year old - so I know my time is coming. But I haven't quite gotten to the stage of teenage dagger eyes (though I remember giving them to my mom!). Lisa's daughter is absolutely beautiful - this beautiful red hair - gorgeous eyes - just beautiful. Well, she is also 13. Does that tell you anything? She was sitting on the rocks - posing while I adjusted my camera settings - and Lisa made a comment about "cheesing" too hard - and look at the look she gave! This was literally a split second after the first shot. I love it - I really do. You guys know me - it's all about celebrating LIFE - all parts of it! The clouds were so awesome on our session day - I got some of the BEST silhouettes! Lisa's family were so patient with me while I had them keep doing different things - her son even got a catctus splinter in his toe - and still kept working for me! This first one was done at the beginning of the session - the second on at the end. What a cool family!

Celebrating Harper - 2.5months | Baby Photographer, Wilmington, NC

I'll tell you - you never know what you are going to get with babies - expecially babies between 2-4 months (well, any age - but especially this age!) Harper's parents were in town visiting family - so it was the perfect opportunity for a beach session - or so we thought. It ended up being really HOT this weekend - so we opted to start the session in my natural light studio!!!! It's so awesome to have this space now to offer to families. We thought it would keep Harper happy - and cool.

Well, things started looking pretty good at first.
And then maybe not so good. It's hard to stay happy when you're a baby.

And what we discovered was that he was very tired.

So dad did his best to keep him awake for a little bit longer - and Harper managed to pull out a smile for us all!

And then proceeded to let us know that he was DONE with the studio! Check out the expression on his face - paired with the non-verbal communication of his middle finger. Ok, this is really an out-take - but I couldn't NOT include it.

So, we went to the beach. It was still HOT - even at 7:30. Harper still wanted to sleep - so we went with it - what else can you do with a baby on the beach?

Mom is just stunning in this one to me - being a mommy looks real good on her!

Such a beautiful family.

I hope you'll be seeing more of Harper and his parents. They come to the area often - and I actually go to their area often, too!

Celebrating Birthdays - Happy 2nd Morgan! | Child Photographer, Wilmington, NC

Well, someone has certainly grown up! I met Morgan last year http://danajacksonphotography.blogspot.com/2008/06/lets-party-with-morgan.html when she turned 1. Well, today she turns TWO and look how much she has grown!!! She is still as beautiful as ever - and so fun to photograph. Usually 2yr olds can be a bit difficult - but we got to spend some one-on-one time (which makes a big difference most of the time) and it truly paid off!

Ok, I had to add one more - I was looking through them this morning - and her expression on this one just drew me in. I don't know if it's the eye contact - the slight smile - I don't know - but she looks like she's older than 2 - and that she knows more than she's saying!

I love her face here - this is her - looking at the door just as her daddy walked into the room. Sigh.

Trying to give me flowers! I had to be quick here - because she wasn't sitting too long!

When we first went outside - she wasn't sure what to think - so I broke out my umbrella - thinking it would help her warm up. Well, at first I was worried it would have the opposite effect - she got very serious. But then she started to have FUN! I love her stance and expression in the last one here!

What a fun party - and I was glad to be a part of it. Parents - if you haven't considered hiring a photographer to photograph your child's birthday party - you are missing out!

Celebrating Kona | Newborn Photographer in Brunswick Co

Meet Kona - just 5 days old - and such a cubby, sweet little girl! I thought at first that she was going to be a challenge to get to sleep - but with enough food, she konked out!

I love the way her hands are by her face - and I love, love her pouty little bottom lip. I'm sure she will use it to her full advantage as she gets older!

And she was awake for a little while - and was sooooo cooperative.

Celebrating Jeremy | Newborn Photographer in Wilmington, NC

I just love babies! Meet Jeremy, just 3 weeks old. I was a little worried before heading to the session about how sleepy and curly he would be. Typically newborns photograph best when they are under 10 days old. Well, Jeremy proved to be the perfect baby! He was still curly - and slept, and slept, and slept. I've been getting very lucky with sleeping babies lately.

I really struggled with whether to show this image in color or black/white - and finally decided that b/w - but really - it was a hard choice! And believe it or not - I didn't pose him this way. I was trying to move him into a different position - and I started adjusting the bean bag he was laying on - and there he went - just being a perfect newborn! I love this image!

This is just the first of dogpiles I'm sure these boys are going to have growing up together - but none will be quite as sweet. Big brothers were so good. They got all their giggles out - and then were very still making sure their baby brother was safe. Thanks boy!

Celebrating Ballerinas | Carolina Beach Photographer

The first year of dance. It's almost a rite of passage for every little girl. This session was all about celebrating that milestone for Abby. Her mom wanted more than just the studio portrait provided by the dance studio - she wanted to celebrate - and that's what I do!

I had this shot in my head before the session - Abby on the hill - backlit - holding the parasol - but what I didn't anticipate was that the wind would be off the hill making it way too difficult for her to hold the parasol herself. So, luckily, big brother was there to help! This shot might even be sweeter!
And then, although I don't have pictures to prove it - right after that picture - Abby ran down the hill, tripped, and fell right into a cactus plant! Yes, that's right - into a cactus plant. She was covered in cactus prickles. I've never seen anything quite like it. The only way we could get them all out of her was to strip her down - all the way - and pull them out one by one. It was quite a site. But if anyone knows Abby, you know that she is the most accident prone little girl - and that she is really a trooper and can typically shake most stuff off.

So, cactus prickles gone, clothes back on, tears wiped away......The Show Must Go On!

What a fun, fun session! I love it when parents think about the little things to celebrate.

Celebrating a New Space (and a cute baby) | Carolina Beach Photographer

I'm so pleased to announce that I have a new natural light studio! Back in March I started renting a space above LeSoleil http://livebythesun.com/ in Carolina Beach to use as a gallery/showroom. It's been working great as a place to showcase some of my work, and also as a place to meet with clients (since I'm now offering in-person proofing!) Well, I've been thinking for a while that, although small, there was some beautiful light in the room most of the time. I think it could be the ideal location for mini-sessions for older kids (that don't need a lot of running room) or babies that aren't running yet! So, I went looking for a subject to photograph - I needed a baby that was sitting up, but not yet crawling - and I found the perfect one. You met P back in December when she was just 4 weeks old http://danajacksonphotography.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html. She was the perfect candidate - she is almost 7months old - sitting beautifully, and lives right around the corner from me and the studio! Perfection!

So, if you're still reading.....welcome to my studio! These are all natural light portraits - and I'm sooooooo excited!

Now, P is a very serious girl - but finally by the end she let the smiles out! Thanks so much Laurie for letting me borrow P!

Celebrating Pregnancy | Wilmington Maternity Photographer

I can't believe it was 10 years ago that I was married and this beautiful mommy-to-be was my flower girl!!!! While in Boone this past weekend for a quick vacation with friends, I was able to catch up with other friends and see Candace for a super quick session - and I mean quick - ummmm maybe 15 minutes!!! She is due with her first baby in just one month. I so wish I wasn't 5 hours away - because I would love to photograph her new baby girl.
When I saw this expression on Candace's face - it was like a blast from the past. It's how I remember her. Anyone who knows Candace - knows this look!
Maybe one of my favorite belly shots! Typically I do this shot with mom sitting down - but in this one she was standing up - and I was very carefully perched on a bar stool - I like the shape of her belly!

It was so good to see you Christie and Candace - I can't wait to see you again!
